\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/b>I am among the few assistant professors with both a strong <strong>clinical mindset<\/strong> and <strong>hands-on, pragmatic engineering R&amp;D experience<\/strong>. My research focuses on translating deployable engineering technologies into medical laboratory workflows and in vitro diagnostics (IVD). My expertise spans integrated platforms combining <strong>biomedical microfluidics<\/strong>, <strong>biosensors<\/strong>, and <strong>microarrays<\/strong>, with an end-to-end development pipeline\u2014from identifying clinical needs and redesigning assay workflows to device design, fabrication, system integration, and performance validation. Unlike many researchers in biomedical engineering, I bring a <strong>medical laboratory \u201cbackend\u201d integration perspective<\/strong> (from sample handling and workflow design to result interpretation and usability assessment), together with working knowledge of <strong>engineering-scale production<\/strong> and <strong>medical device regulatory fundamentals<\/strong>. For students with a background in <strong>Medical Laboratory Science (MLS)<\/strong>, the workflows you already know\u2014<strong>sampling<\/strong>, <strong>pretreatment<\/strong>, <strong>reactions<\/strong>, <strong>readout<\/strong>, and <strong>quality control<\/strong>\u2014are not \u201cseparate\u201d from engineering. In my lab, that diagnostic mindset becomes a key advantage to build testing systems that are <strong>faster<\/strong>, <strong>more automated<\/strong>, <strong>require less sample<\/strong>, and are closer to real <strong>point-of-care (POCT)<\/strong> use.<\/p><p>We start from <strong>clinical needs<\/strong> and <strong>laboratory bottlenecks<\/strong>, then redesign diagnostic steps\u2014<strong>sample pretreatment<\/strong>, <strong>separation\/enrichment<\/strong>, <strong>reaction<\/strong>, and <strong>detection<\/strong>\u2014within microfluidic systems, while leveraging <strong>micro\/nanofabrication<\/strong> to improve <strong>analytical performance<\/strong> and <strong>reproducibility<\/strong>. Topics may include <strong>integrated nucleic-acid and immunoassay testing<\/strong>, <strong>modular sample handling<\/strong>, <strong>biosensing and signal readout<\/strong>, and <strong>system-level validation<\/strong> with translational considerations.
